Perioral dermatitis guide
Calm Your
Perioral Dermatitis
A gentle, less-is-more approach to soothing the look of redness, bumps and irritation around the mouth, nose and eyes, without harsh actives or steroids.
We Understand Perioral Dermatitis
Perioral dermatitis often appears after using steroid creams, heavy moisturisers, or fluoride toothpaste. The skin barrier becomes overwhelmed and reacts with stinging, small bumps, and a stubborn red rash that won't go away. Our 'less is more' approach strips your routine back to gentle, natural essentials, letting your skin reset and rebuild on its own terms.
Your Perioral Routine
Recommended Products
Strip back to the absolute essentials. Avoid all heavy creams, SLS-based cleansers, and active ingredients while your skin settles.
No 1 - Illuminate Face Oil
£38.00
Our bestselling face oil uses just three natural ingredients to cleanse, hydrate, and calm reactive skin. No preservatives, no synthetic additives, nothing your skin needs to fight against.
Why it works
Perioral dermatitis thrives on product overload. Illuminate's three-ingredient formula gives your skin the nourishment it needs without triggering reactions. The natural fatty acids support your barrier without creating dependency.
How to use
Apply 3-4 drops to cleansed skin morning and evening. Gently press into the affected area around the mouth and nose. Do not rub. Use alone for the first four weeks.
No 3 - Calm Butter
£28.00
Unscented body butter for dry, reactive skin. Deeply moisturising with zero synthetic fragrance, preservatives, or irritants.
Why it works
Once your skin has settled, Calm Butter can be introduced for extra support on very dry or flaking patches. The unscented formula means no additional triggers.
How to use
Introduce after four to six weeks once redness has reduced. Apply a small amount to dry patches only. Stop if any irritation occurs.
No 2 - Glow Face Scrub
£36.00
A gentle exfoliating scrub that removes dead skin cells without micro-tears. Leaves skin feeling nourished and deeply cleansed.
Why it works
Only introduce once perioral dermatitis is fully calm, usually after three months. Gentle exfoliation can help with residual flaking and congestion.
How to use
Use once per week maximum, only on completely calm skin. Avoid any active bumps or redness. Follow immediately with Illuminate Face Oil.

Skin Progress Guide
Everyone's journey is different, but here's a general roadmap for what to expect as your skin begins to heal.
Strip Back
Stop ALL skincare except Illuminate. Switch to fluoride-free toothpaste. Skin may flare initially.
- Stop steroid creams (with GP guidance)
- No SLS toothpaste
- Avoid all heavy moisturisers
Settle
Bumps reduce, redness softens. Skin starts to feel less reactive. Add Calm Butter sparingly if needed.
- Pat dry with a clean cloth
- No new products
- Drink plenty of water
Clear
Most visible bumps and redness fade. Skin texture smooths. You should look and feel close to 'clear'.
- Keep routine minimal
- Watch for triggers
- Reintroduce SPF carefully
Maintain
Skin is clear and resilient. Slowly reintroduce other products one at a time, waiting 2 weeks between each.
- One new product at a time
- Avoid known triggers
- Glow Scrub once weekly

IMPORTANT GUIDE
Triggers & Common Causes
Identifying and removing triggers is the most important step in clearing perioral dermatitis.
Medical Disclaimer
If your perioral dermatitis is severe or not improving after 12 weeks, please consult a dermatologist. Some cases benefit from a short course of antibiotics alongside topical care.
Topical Steroids
Most Common Trigger
8 weeks +
Average Clearing Time
Mainly Women 16–45
Affects
The most common triggers are topical steroid creams (even mild ones), heavy moisturisers, fluoride toothpaste (especially SLS), inhaled steroid sprays, hormonal changes, and occlusive products like sunscreen with silicones. Often it's a combination.
Steroids may temporarily clear perioral dermatitis but they always cause it to return worse, this is called a rebound flare. You should stop using them, but please consult your GP first as some cases require gradual tapering or short-course antibiotics for support.
We recommend a complete makeup break for the first 2–4 weeks if possible. After that, choose mineral-based, fragrance-free options and apply minimally. Always remove gently with a soft cloth and lukewarm water.
Perioral skin is hyper-reactive to occlusive ingredients, fragrances, and emulsifiers. Adding a new product often triggers a fresh wave. Stick to Illuminate Face Oil only, its single-ingredient simplicity is what your skin needs.
Yes, for most people, perioral dermatitis fully clears within 8–12 weeks of stripping back. Post-inflammatory pigmentation can take 3–6 months to fade fully. The Glow Face Scrub (once cleared) can speed this up.
